More and more small farmers in Rwanda are getting the education, information and technology they need to be competitive traders in their agricultural pursuits. Producer groups, stakeholders and farmers are getting all the help they need about growing their crops, and processing and exporting them in a lucrative manner.
In just ten days, trainers enlightened participants in business skills enhancement. More than the production aspects, the Rwandan farmers’ organizations and cooperatives are also getting a lot of help and learning from producer groups. Environmental issues, fair trade initiatives and developing business plans were also among the imparted lessons which the small farmers truly appreciate.
On the other hand, the producers groups’ management teams were as excited about the turnout of their efforts to share technology and information to Rwandan farmers. After all, the beneficiaries of the trainings knew more about finance management, records keeping and trading, as well as handling profits, income and expenditures. More than that, they were given valuable lessons in valuing their crops and skills at growing them, as well as the profiting aspect involved in their pursuits.
Growers of banana, coffee, mushroom and other products like sisal and wood crafts also expressed greater knowledge about environmental concerns. This particularly keened their learning to making the raw materials available as well for future generations to profit from. Apart from this, many groups solicited assistance from their local governments so the cooperative members could conduct tree planting missions.
The ten-day activity was capped with celebration as Rwandan trainees were confident with their new-found education particular to their small sized business endeavors. They were joined by the private sector groups and the federations for alternative trade personalities, the Chamber of Arts and Craft of Rwanda and other NGOs.
Truly, a good part of Rwanda looks at fair trade participation with much optimism after the event, specifically on aspects of profits, group efficiency and alleviated living conditions of their members.
